Getting Paid After Shipping

Everyone likes getting paid. Meeting up to complete an in-person transaction typically results in walking away with cash in your hand, but what happens when you’ve shipped your item? How and when do you get paid? Let’s chat about that. We’re here to go over the process of getting paid using OfferUp’s shipping feature.

 

After an offer had been accepted by the seller, the funds from the buyer are collected using our 3rd party payment processor, Stripe, and they have four days to ship the item off, and mark the item as shipped. Once the buyer receives their package, they have three days to inspect the item. Keep in mind that it will take a couple days for the item to ship in the mail. The buyer has 3 days to either rate the transaction or open a Buyer Protection claim. At the end of this 3 day period, the funds collected by Stripe are then released to the seller.


When the money has been released, it will automatically be transferred to your debit card or bank info if you have your card or bank info saved to your account. This transfer should be complete within five business days. If there’s a holiday in that timeframe, that may cause an additional delay. If you don’t have your credit card or bank info saved, this can also cause delays, as the funds will remain in a pending state until you add that in. Details on how to upload payment info here.

 

Let’s play this out with the maximum allotted time...

It’s the 1st of the month and you accepted an offer to sell your limited edition collector's item to Fred. As the seller, you have up to four days to get that item sent out. You send it out on the 4th. The item is in transit and arrives at Fred's on the 7th. Fred has three days, or until the 10th, to evaluate the item and give you a rating. Unfortunately, this time, it looks like Fred didn’t give a rating, and the funds are released after the three day period, on the 10th. Once the funds have been released, you should see them in your bank account within 3-5 business days, no later than the 15th.

Fees? What fees?!

Because we’re giving sellers the option to get their item in front of millions of potential buyers across the country, we charge a low 9.9% transaction fee. There’s no fee for the buyer, except to pay for the cost of shipping. As always, local in-person transactions are free for both parties. Other companies who offer similar services charge anywhere between 10% to 20%, so we feel great about the value we’re providing to our community.

 

My deposit says pending! Help!

If your completed transaction says that your deposit is pending, typically you won’t need to take any further action aside from being patient Smiley Happy If you believe the process is taking longer than usual, or you have other questions, our Payments & Shipping team are standing by to assist. Please note that you only have to reach out to them once. Writing in multiple times will result in a delayed response (your last communication gets bumped to the back of the line), especially if several people are all writing in several times. If you've submitted a ticket regarding the shipping feature, our Payments & Shipping team has received it and will respond ASAP - promise.

 

One last thing to note - please remember that this feature is brand new. We’re working hard to make everything as seamless as possible, but with any new launch, there may be a few hiccups. If you happen to come across an issue, give us feedback that we can pass onto our product teams so we can build an experience that you love. We’re actively listening and passing on the constructive criticism we receive.

Why does my card get charge a $1 every time I make an offer for an item I want to buy and be ship to me. Even if the seller doesn't accept my shipping offer, or the time for my ship to me offer has expired.

I'm not sure how to make a new thread but I'd like to say to everyone including offerup that I just got paid for 3 of my orders. It wasn't bad timing at all. The only reason why I'm making this thread was because of a few sellers on here that were upset over not getting paid yet. It almost got me scared but I was patient. My first 3 orders were may 4th and 5th. I shipped them which it takes time to get to my customers and then once my customers received the items I counted 3 days after each one and with the processing time and not including weekends because banks do not make direct deposits on Saturdays and Sundays I received 3 payments right into my bank account 9am this morning and those 3 orders do not say pending anymore. I just wanted to post this for the sellers that were complaining about not getting paid yet. You have to remember between the time that it might take for the customer to receive the item and then you have to wait a few more days for them to look it over just in case they would rather send it back and then the process to your bank account which took only overnight for me but some banks can take longer. Excellent job OfferUp!

Also, I'd like to add, once OfferUp comes up with a new update you should make it where all the payments that are not pending anymore just go into a wallet for now and when the seller wants to deposit their money into their bank account they have a choice and they can either take all of it in one lump and deposit it into their bank account or just some instead of all seperate deposits. For example I had 3 seperate direct deposits for each order this morning come in instead of 1 just tallying up those 3 orders together. But that's for a later time and update if you decide that that's a good idea. But good job guys! Keep up the good work.

Hi @Mj_206. Yes I do plan on using it again. I already have used it after that. I love it very much and thank you for passing on the idea for the one lump sum. I just HAD to post it because I was reading what a couple of the sellers were posting on the forum bashing OfferUp and also giving bad ratings on BBB which is horrible. Especially, for something that just came out beta. OfferUp has been around for awhile it's not as though they just came out and they're trying to scam and take peoples money. They just added a new feature. People have to give it a chance and remember things take time. If people sell stolen stuff on here or if they dont send the right item to the customer and they just dispurse the money to the seller really quick without waiting for any kind of complaint from the buyer just to make sure the order it correct then OfferUp would be scared. Pardon my french. So things take time people! Be patient or just try to sell somewhere else than. But don't bash a site that's been around for awhile now just because your pay isn't getting to you quick enough.

I’ve been waitin for a week to be paid.  Delivery was made last Monday on May 7th

@Ej420delivery was made on the 7th and then you have to add in the 3 extra days that they give the customer just in case something is wrong with the item. Then you start the process. you should probably be getting paid by Wednesday or Thursday. If you go and click on your funds and then click the taqb that says transactions the picture will say deposit pending. Once the deposit is being dispursed the picture will become clear and it won't say deposit penging anymore. Then you should have your money in your account within a few days. Just be patient. You'll get it.

So I’m having the same problem as the other guy.  Now it no longer says deposit pending. And I have a zero balance.  And no money at the bank 

 

I just wanna be paid.   

If it's not showing deposit pending anymore and you're not seeing it in your account then it's on its way. Just be patient. It should be in your account by tomorrow or the next day deffinitely.

An offer including shipping was accepted,  mailed the following day, received three days later, buyer responded to the receipt of item, received receipt of payment sent, and 1&1/2 weeks later I have still not received payment for my item! Three inquiries later and still no reply other than an auto reply in app.! Very bad taste in my mouth after this first use of shipping. My not do it again ever!!!

See! Everyone has to understand this whole thing is BRAND NEW with the shipping internationally. You just have to be patient everyone! They're not here to steal your money. Trust me.

Hi @KG830. I'm not saying this to be mean but are you reading any of the messages above yours? If you don't see your money anymore in there nor does it say pending anymore then that just means it's on its way. Keep checking your bank account and it should be in there tomorrow or the next. =)

I have been reading all of the comments above mine and still not understanding why I haven't received my money. It's been almost 2 weeks since the items shipped. With every other appi have sold through I have never had so much trouble getting my money. I will never ship anything through this platform again!

@KG830I'm sorry you feel that way. I've sold over 10 items so far on Offerup in the last 2 weeks since the shipping international has started and I love it. Yes, it is a slower process than others but it just started to ship. knowing that this whole international shipping is brand new wouldn't you think that it might take longer than some other sites that have been shipping for years? We can't expect it to be like selling on ebay or amazon right now. I have faith in these guys and through updates things will start going faster I'm sure. It's BRAND NEW. Cut them some slack. Everyone who is selling on here knows that the shipping method on here is brand new. You shouldn't have used it then.

I never say anything about shipping internationally at all. These items were shipped within the states so can you now expain why I haven't been paid?

It doesn't matter international or within the US. It's brand new @KG830. They just started shipping on this site. It's always been local. So if you know it's brand new and you really want to sell something and get your money quick then you should have went somewhere else. When I heard they just started shipping on this site I didnt say "oh I have to really sell something let me sell it on here." I said "let me TRY this out and see how it goes." I see it's alittle slow BUT in my own ipinion I'm not in need of getting paid super fast so I can wait the week to get paid. I like how they give 3 days AFTER it's been delivered to the customer to start releasing funds. I know now if I want to purchase something on here I can trust Offerup and me not getting scammed.

I have not received my money either I shipped items May 2, the money is not showing in my offer up balance anymore I called my bank and they say not transactions have came through or pending nor sure what's going on when will I receive my money?

I have talked to both of the people I have shipped to and they have received the item and says Offer up has their money which is MY MONEY! Im done sounding like a broken record. @Lucky777 if its not showing up on your offerup account then its in limbo on its way to your bank account. Give it a day or 2 more and them complain. Anyone else , HAVE PATIENCE! They're not scamming you. I've gotten paid 3 times by them on 3 orders already. The End.

Please offer free shipping and allow sellers to upload tracking info. This would open up a huge market for sellers to list hundreds of items. Pretty much kicking eBay in the arse!

@Donna_K_Barrera that would bring in alot more sellers AND buyers. Free shipping and we can upload our own tracking numbers to our customers.

@Alexis13 I was in your shoes yesterday very upset because it was taking so long. Your money should be in your account tomorrow =) once mine came out of pending it was in my bank account the next day.

The information provided is helpful, however as a seller I prefer to get paid up front, this method allows me to use funds to ship the item out to buyer and for any packing materials needed. 

This method deters most sellers from selling (I avoid selling on mercari for this same reason and prefer eBay selling method).

Another aspect of this new selling option is that there really is no seller protection from buyers whom want something for nothing.

Someone Plz Help Me ,,, I sold an Item here and was w as witing  For a shipping label Which I thought was gonna come via < Mail That's when  When back and read the instructions and realized that I had to print out the label  Why while all this is going on I was emailing of her up and China figure out what's going on would delay bull which I never got any response So when I figure out that you have to printed label I got the label and sent it out right away as I sent it out I went into my app and the order was canceled right after I sent out the packageI been emailing offer up to 3 times A-day for the past a week and a 1/2The only response I get is there so there sorry about the issue and there forwarding this problem to the pay specialist I get this response every single day automatically .. The person already recieved the item  ....I cant explain how i feel loosing a $1200 worth  of stuff  and offerup is completely ignoring me ... I am forced to make a police report witch i am not to happy doin. If anyone can help plz ]

 Thats exactly why I'm skeptical doing that, especially with items that cost over $300.. there's no dispute option..and what if buyer using stolen CCard and you sent your stuff.. he gets it.. and real owner of the card or scammer calls bank and reporting stolen... then what happens to my money, my item I sold? Nothing.. no1 gonna help me here.. no protection at all.. everything gonna be frozen and you gonna stuck.. All this scenarios above my post sound like fake.. advertising this app like it amazing.. try to sell something expensive then we'll see. So where is that Admin to answer my question???

So I couldn't get to my shipping label, went ahead and paid myself, have a new tracking number, and now offer up a saying they're cancelling the transaction, so I lose my item, and payment... Plus I've written 3 times in 3 or 4 days on this matter, and offer up will not respond. I'm about to close my account

 That's exactly my point, so many situations can be there, that you can loose your item you selling and the money, well that's how they make their money..I did find website that actually cheaper than eBay to sell and they using PayPal for your payments.. it just people can only sell electronics like cellphones, game consoles and ect..and its not so popular (( I wish they could use PayPal.. it would be life easier for us

@SkyDancer this sounds like a very specific case that needs to be brought to our Payments/Shipping team. Shipping items outside of the shipping labels that we provide will completely change the process. The shipping labels we send out are used to track and trigger the next steps in the shipping process, and if the item was shipped and scanned with the improper label it will absolutely be cancelled by our team within that 3 day period, which is laid out in our policies. It is very important to use the labels we provide.

Shipping in any way outside of the OfferUp Shipping feature isn't recommended. This feature is brand new, and is certainly not a scam. Any buyers protection claims and any other seller investigation work can only be completed if the steps are followed correctly. In this case, it looks like our process hasn't been followed, so you will want to reach out to the proper team here

 

If anyone is ever having troubles along the process, it's better to patiently wait for the Shipping team to respond to your case. They will respond. Trying to get around the process can certainly add some difficulties along the way.

I myself like the idea of being able to buy things and have them shipped to you through offer up however when you look at some of the items that you may purchase and you look at the shipping cost it somehow doesn't balance out to what you would normally pay for shipping and so you wonder if there is going to be a delay or some extra cost once the person you're buying it from does get the sticker to ship your item... For example you want to buy a set of tires from another state and it says the shipping cost will only be $7..... how is that possible when you can go in mail a letter or a packet of documents that will cost you more than $7 at the post office so you wonder okay how is this going to work out?so how do you guys determine the shipping cost and what happens when the sellar gets the mailing label and get to the post office and they require more money???

First of all I've been trying to get offer up to respond to my messeges for 3 days. And I guess I missed that in the policies, but it makes no sense. I'm only allowed to use your shipping labels even though I shelled out my own cash, and now get pentalised by not getting paid or even the courtesy of a response to my messeges? And the point of shipping costs... If its not the exact amount, how does that work? If its more we pay, which changes the shipping label, so again, no payment? And if its less, where did the extra payment for shipping from the buyer go??? I'm not understanding the logic in any of this....

@SkyDancer Again, Buyer Protection can only be used if OfferUp shipping has been used. If the item was shipped through a service outside of OfferUp shipping, it does not qualify. This is stated over here.
What isn't covered:

  • The purchase was conducted through payment or shipping systems outside of OfferUp

Payment will be disbursed to the seller after the item has been received by the buyer. The only way our systems will know that the buyer has received the item is if the proper labels were used. Since outside labels were used, the process is very different.

That being said, this has been escalated to our Shipping and Payments team.

I have been waiting 2 weeks to get paid for an item I shipped. I have added my bank into and still no payment. I tried adding my debit card and it says I cant add a credit card but it's a debit card and it the system will not accept it. I feel like offer up has scammed me and am filing a complaint with the BBB and the attorney general's office.

I was very skeptical about getting paid after reading many negative comments BUT I received my payment exactly as I was supposed to.  Funds were released 3 business days after the buyer received the item and $ were in my account the following day!!  Looks like maybe they have the issues worked out now and I’m happy to leave a positive comment!

Just a quick question, if a buyer rates a shipped item as soon as it's delivered, why is the payment process still taking as long as if they never rated after allowed 3 days timeframe? Doesn't the payment get released for deposit upon rating?

Well I'm not feeling too confident using Offer Up anymore... I never received help after plenty of attempts on my behalf. I sucked up the first sale losing out on my item and money.... Apparently it was my fault for not using your shipping labels, which I have problems with anyway... What happens of the buyer doesn't rate or open a claim? Do I still get paid? I feel like this is some really shady stuff going on... EBay has it right... You guys need to work on it and figure it out...
