I don’t know if anyone else has done this.  But if you are selling a high ticket item such as a cell phone and of course they are going to be paying cash.  I’ve been concerned about 2 things:  1. The safety of where to meet. 2. Are they giving you counterfeit money or not.  I have suggested meeting at a bank so you can have the money verified to be on the safe side.

Community Manager

Totally understand those concerns, @Crystal15! We recently launched SafeTradeSpots.com to help our community members find safe locations to complete transactions at. Oh! And get one of those counterfeit pens. They are really inexpensive and totally come in handy.

Inside a casino is even better, as nowhere else are there more security cameras and security guards.

At the grocery store where there r a lot of cameras and not easy to get out of the parking lot.

I have us the map search to recheck with customers to hope that they want to meet for there item i have everything with me. So i live in between city like 20 miles but more like 30 or 40 min depending on where you meet. So i don't want to waste my time going if they not coming. I was going to be in the are taking care of business any way. But still was will to do the drop for the sale. Cuz they live in that city.

Suggest shipping when they are to far from you.

As a seller I’m always looking for ways to be more profitable. We all know that time is money, and wasting gas is wasting money. I always suggest a location (usually a local grocery store) no more than 2 miles away from my home. If a buyer is unwilling to drive to me, I always apply up to a $2-$3 discount. That will usually get them motivated to make the drive. Of course shipping is always an option.

I love meeting up at grocery stores, @Jesse75006

In my city the Police Department has set up a "Safe Place" where buyers and sellers can meet up and have a little more sense of security.

Ours is located near, but not at the police department and it is well lit with 24 hours surveillance.

It never hurts to see if you PD has such a place or suggesting to them that they make a place like this.

I would highly suggest using a meeting place in public and dont go alone. Some douch bag beat my husband with a pipe iron in the head and back causing him to have to go to the hospital . This kind of stuff is uncalled for.

Does anyone here sell out of your house.?

I sold my item and haven't been paid! Now offerup is not responding to my emails. This is unacceptable. I checked the BBB and there are numerous complaints about this same issue. If you complain they block or ban you. You can't speak with a live person. I filed a police report and I am currently speaking with an attorney. I was told by the police that they have thousands of complaints on OFFERUP.  I'M DONE WITH THIS  SITE!! It has been 8 days and still no deposit. What is the problem. I even saw a message that said my deposit was canceled. Then another that said my funds have been deposited. However, I haven't received any funds. OFFERUP IS A SCAM! CHECK BBB AND SCAM REVIEWS!! I sent the item and I want to be paid for my merchandise.

This is a great service to offer to both the seller and buyer. Big kudos to OfferUp. Nice to know that you are concerned about everyone's safety.

I’m new to this; when it states in someone’s profile that they’ve purchased 16 items/sold 1 are these verified by offer up?

Level 9

@Heritage06

Welcome to OfferUp!

In answer to your question, when you see a profile that shows "purchased 16/sold 1" those numbers are provided by OfferUp.

There's been some issue with OfferUp's profile numbers lately,  but to my knowledge all the problems involve OfferUp underreporting purchases/sales, not overreporting.

I suppose a seller could mark all their stuff SOLD to inflate their numbers, but you can also check their star ratings. If they have lots of sales listed but no ratings from buyers, that could be a red flag.

Hope that helps.

Neighbor

Thank you; I’m just so nervous of criminals. I have an offer but he has no verified e-mail or phone #!!!

There are lots of tips on the forum for how to stay safe when meeting someone.  Taking someone with you is a great idea. So is meeting in a public place during daylight hours.

Feel free to check out some of the other posts and recommendations,  and congrats on your first offer!

(Also if you want to reply to someone here on the forum, put an @ in front of their screen name, like I did with yours.)

I have just recently became part of this offer up website. I have alot of unwanted items most of them are from my mom and other items i just dont need anymore im learning how to do all this as we speak but my question foe you has anyone wver tried to sale there home on this website before?? And question2 is has anyone ever meet anyone at there home before is that safe or should u alwAys meet them

Level 5

@Angie_Brennan42 I woukw hesitate to bring someone who you know nothing about into y our home. Whike it's true that you'll probably more comfortable at home, if the deal goes South, now the individual knows exactly where you sleep at night.

Thank you so much i will not be bringing or meeting anyone at my home

Place to meet Caseys general store anywhere there is one close.

Captain

Still be cautious meeting somewhere. I had to report someone today because he wouldn't meet me where I felt comfortable and he got all crazy!. Most of the time everything works out great but every once in awhile🙃

I like meeting at local restaurants or gas stations

Level 2

great advice i will take it to heart.

Nice advice and good tips for using this app!

Neighbor

There should be a section on offer up for all your current offers in case you need to cancel one and you don’t remember what you offered to buy.

Whenever selling any jewelry I always suggest we we meet at my local police department. That way I know there's cameras and police nearby. Of course I have not had any luck nobody wants to meet there.

Just a question, I'm definitely not worried about getting robbed or anything as to I am smarter than that and would be prepared in case such events happen but I'm trying to sell a car on offer up now and a few people look sketchy. Is it a bad idea to have them come to my house for the transaction or they just wanna look at it should I do it down the street or at a gas station or what would be best

Meet in public

Thanks so much for the advice. Some of us sales veterans can get too comfortable and forget that people are not always as honest as we hope. Complacency is one of the biggest dangers in this field, but it’s also totally manageable! Don’t forget to use resources like http://www.safetradespots.com

This type of safety measure makes you [the seller] feel more comfortable, but also helps the buyer feel more comfortable too. An added bonus is that it creates a level of professionalism and transparency, which leads to better reviews, more sales, and the potential for higher dollar transactions.
